Kevin Laurence has been a partner at Stoel Rives LLP since 2001 when he founded the patent practice in the firm's Salt Lake City office. With 18 years of experience, he provides patent-related services involving the life sciences, especially pharmaceuticals and medical devices, chemical fields, and other technologies. He focuses on portfolio management, all phases of patent procurement, preparation of non-infringement and invalidity opinions, product clearance analysis, due diligence evaluations, and pre-litigation evaluations and strategic counseling for asserting patent rights or responding to patent infringement allegations. He is experienced with post-grant proceedings for improving offensive and defensive positions, including filing and prosecuting reissue applications, prosecuting applications being reexamined due to requests from third parties, and preparing requests for reexamination in conjunction with concurrent litigation and as a negotiation tool to avoid litigation.
Mr. Laurence is a lecturer for Patent Resources Group's Reexamination and Reissue Practice course. He is also a frequent speaker on other patent topics. He taught courses as an adjunct professor at the University of Utah's law school during 2003-2008, including a course titled Biotechnology and Chemical Patent Law and a course titled International IP Law. He has also taught as an adjunct professor at Brigham Young University, where he received his law degree in 1992 and his undergraduate degree in chemistry in 1989. He is presently serving as a member of the National Advisory Council for Invent Now Kids, Inc. Since 2007, Mr. Laurence has been recognized in the top tier (band 1) of Utah's intellectual property attorneys in Chambers USA and in The Best Lawyers in America. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, state and federal courts in Utah and Washington, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
