Anthony (Tony) Gutowski is a partner in Finnegan, Henderson's Reston, VA office. His practice includes client counseling, patent procurement, and patent enforcement. Mr. Gutowski advises clients ranging from large, international corporations to start-ups in patent matters relating to infringement, validity, due diligence, and licensing. He also focuses his practice on strategic patent portfolio growth, management, and utilization. Mr. Gutowski has extensive experience in reexamination practice, representing both patent owners and requesters in a substantial number of complicated inter partes and ex parte reexamination proceedings. He also has developed an expertise in other complex U.S. Patent and Trademark Office matters such as petitions, appeals, interferences, and reissues. In addition, he has significant experience in securing patent protection outside of the U.S. He works closely with domestic and international clients, advising them in matters unique to U.S. practice and assisting in their development of U.S. patent strategies. His technical expertise spans a vast array of subjects primarily in the mechanical, electro-mechanical, and business method fields. He frequently represents clients in the medical device, consumer product, construction equipment, and vehicle component industries, where rock-solid patent positions form a critical foundation for meeting business goals. He regularly lectures in the U.S. and Europe on a variety of issues relating to U.S. patent law. Mr. Gutowski graduated from Villanova University (B.M.E., 1989) and The George Washington University National Law Center (J.D., with honors, 1994). He was admitted to practice in Virginia in 1994 and in the District of Columbia in 1996 and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
